Plan Ahead | Things to Consider Before Ordering Your Titan

Some old bloke from a long time ago once said: “by failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”

It doesn’t matter how good your garage or shed is, if you don’t prepare and plan it in advance you can run into troubles that could cost you money or reduce the life of your shed. By going over our five-step checklist, you’ll avoid all these risks, save some coin and fast-track your project so you can move in quickly to start getting all the benefits of your new Titan faster:

  • Need Vs. Want. What you want and what you need can be two very different things. We admit that our sheds and garages are good-looking, but don’t get lured into buying something that is going to be far bigger and more expensive than you really need. Consider what you’ll be using it for. Say you want storage for one car only; measure your car, allow for access space, then add around 25 per cent for the unplanned things, like also storing push bikes and ladders. There will always be more uses for your garage than what you first build it for!
  • Plan The Location. This works in a few ways. Firstly, you want to make sure your location is fairly flat for easier slab-pouring. Secondly, check the accessibility – can you easily drive your car in? Is there plenty of room in front of doorways to allow easy access? Lastly, think about the environment. If you’ll be storing things such as cardboard boxes, furniture or rustable metals items, avoid anywhere low where water may pool. Try to avoid too many overhanging trees that may cause immediate or long-term damage with fallen branches or leaves.
  • Think About End Use. If you need a potting shed, there’s no point building it out on the driveway, away from your garden. If you’ll be spending heaps of time in your garage, don’t build it in the sunniest, hottest spot on your property. If you want to be working on your car, you may want to choose a double garage instead of a single, so you still have plenty of room for tools and to move around your car.
  • What Are You Storing? If you have lots of long items to store, like timber, piping, even surfboards and kayaks, choose a design with higher trusses to give you plenty of overhead room. Volatile products, including fuels, paints and cleaners, might need to be kept cool, either in a shady spot or with roof turbine ventilation – or both.
  • Don’t Forget the Look. Your new garage or shed is going to be visible, sometimes even the first thing people see when approaching your property. This isn’t so much of a worry with commercial properties, but for your home, the last thing you want is a big, industrial structure in your front yard. Picking a lower truss helps your garage to blend into the background more, while choosing colour, wall style and a sectional roller door can all add up to making your garage or shed an asset – both visually and financially – to your home.

Taking a little bit of time to think these things over will pay off significantly down the track, giving you a shed or garage that will be more useful, appealing and long-lasting than you could have imagined.
