10 Ways to Make the Most of Your Garage

Gone are the days when a garage was just a place that you parked your car; modern garages can be so much more.  In this article, we’re going to look at 10 ways you can make the most of your garage. From the zany to the practical, this article is going to show you just how effective a life space a garage can be. If you’ve got visions of turning your garage into something else then if you’ve got a bit of ingenuity, the only limit to your designs is your imagination.

Disclaimer: Before you get started on your remodelling project, we’d like to mention that these are purely ideas, and it’s up to the individual to consult with their local councils before pursuing any work. Now let’s look at these ideas!

1. Games room

Why not turn your garage into something else fantastic that starts with the letter G? A games room! Whether you equip it with a pool table, arcade games, or even a new Xbox, turning your garage into a games room will definitely earn you some brownie points from the kids! Good luck trying to keep them out of there, though, unless the plan is to lure them in and keep them there…

2. Gym

We all like staying fit, but is gym membership expensive or what? All that just to use a machine covered in someone else’s sweat? No thank you! Converting your garage into your own personal gym will solve several problems - the membership costs, the sweaty machines, and the laziness that comes with having to leave your home. Believe me, all the motivation you’ll need to exercise will come from the simple fact that you need to get your money’s worth out of that bench press machine you just bought.

3. Home theatre

Cinema tickets aren’t getting any cheaper, and why bother leaving the home when you don’t need to at all? (Sense a theme, boys..?) Garage walls provide the perfect screen for any large projector, and there’s plenty of space for your family to relax on comfortable chairs. All you need to do is enlist a child as an usher to clean up all the popcorn.

4. Craft room

We all like to try arts and crafts every now and then, but as we know, it can be quite a messy process, and in most homes it’s hard enough just to find the space to perform said creative tasks. Not so if you have a garage that has been converted into a dedicated craft room or studio! Hang inspiring photos on the wall and fill your drawers with supplies to get creating. This can be customised according to your own personal interests - like photography, create a dark room; enjoy puzzles, dedicate the whole darn room to assembling massive puzzles!

5. Yoga studio

Yoga’s hot right now, but you probably don’t have enough space to practice it in your laundry… Not so if you convert your garage into a dedicated yoga room! All you need is a decent floor covering, a set of exercise mats, and you’re good to go. Bring your friends and enjoy some exercise together. If you’re feeling particularly creative, bring a bar heater into the room and turn it into a Bikram yoga session! Just don’t forget to bring a towel…

6. Extra room

Managing teens can be tough, but you can make it a whole lot easier on the both of you by setting aside your garage as their own independent bedroom (particularly if they’re used to sharing with a sibling). Another idea could be to set the garage aside as a guest room. You can use this if you have family members pop in from time to time, or even rent it out as part of Airbnb or similar.

7. Music studio

Sure, we’ve seen it all in the movies, but if you’ve got an inner musician within you that’s dying to get out, this can be the perfect way to scratch that itch without making your spout sit through an impromptu performance of Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run in your living room. A garage is the perfect space for your band to rehearse, or for you guys to try and record that first hit single!

8. Home office

People are increasingly taking their work home, and the best way to do this is by having a home office. A garage is the perfect area for this. Separate from the rest of the house so it feels like you’re actually going somewhere to do some work, but close enough to the rest of the house so you can go into your kitchen for a snack or take a three hour lunch on the couch without the boss knowing.

9. Indoor entertainment area

This one’s a little out of left field, but if you love to entertain, why not open up your garage to some guests? Open the door for a nice cool breeze in summer, and close it in winter to keep your guests nice and warm.

10. Man cave

Perhaps it’s the association with vehicles that makes the garage the perfect area for a man cave, but it’s definitely what you’d call a second calling for the space. The beauty of a man cave is that everyone is different and so every cave is too. Adorn yours the way you need in order to make it special.
